Before there was the Swoosh, before there was Nike, there were two visionaries who pioneered a revolution in athletic gear that redefined the industry. Nike was originally founded as “Blue Ribbon Sports” in January of 1964 by University of Oregon track athlete Philip Knight and his coach Bill Bowerman. However; in 1967 BRS was able to open a retail store in California and continue to pick up steam. The Swoosh was first used by Nike on June 18th, 1971 and since then has become the world’s most recognized logo. The word Nike was derived from the Greek goddess of victory. In 1978, BRS officially renamed itself Nike and brought on tennis legend Ilie Nastase as the first professional athlete to sign with them. Sponsorship of athletes became a key marketing tool in the company’s growth and success.
