The No. 1 player from United Kingdom who finished in Top 20 for first time and captured his first career ATP title. He is the second youngest player to finish in year-end Top 20. He was born on May 15, 1987 in Glasgow, Scotland. He is a proud Scotsman and rumours speculate that he is not comfortable with his British identity and is an advocate for Scotland's independence.
2005 was considered his breakthrough year. At wimbledon he recieved a wildcard and went in ranked 374th in the world. He made it to the 3rd round being the only Scotsman to do so in the open era and the only Briton left within the tournament. The British rallied behind the young player as he faced David Nalbandian but he still lost in a five-setter. In the US open he lost in second round to frenchman Arnaud Clement. In 2006 Australian Murray lost first round to Juan Ignacio Chela but later in the SAP open, beat two former number-ones, Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt. Wimbledon 06' he reached 4th round but lost to Marcos Baghdatis. 2007 Australian lost to Nadal in five sets in fourth round. He has had a great start to the 07' season until french open where he had to retire due to a wrist injury and had to announce he can not participate in his home countires' grand slam, Wimbledon.
