Fernando González was born July 29, 1980 in Santiago, Chile. Gonzalez is known as one of the hardest hitters in the circuit. In the past couple of years, he has become a dominant force on the court with his aggresive groundstrokes and powerful forehand.
González's first ATP title came in 2000 when he defeated compatriot Nicolás Massú in the US Men's Clay Court Championships final in Orlando, Florida. In 2002 González surpassed former number one player Marcelo Ríos as the top Chilean in the singles rankings, and was one of the most improved players on the ATP circuit, jumping 118 positions in the ATP Champions Race. In 2006, González became the third Chilean to be ranked among the top ten in singles.
In the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, he had a tremendous outcome by winning gold in mens doubles and bronze in singles. The highest ranking he has reached is fifth. In 2005, he made it to the quarter finals and in 2007 Australian open he reached the finals only losing to Federer. Throughout his career, González has defeated many former number-one players, including Lleyton Hewitt, Andre Agassi (both while they held the top spot), Andy Roddick and Pete Sampras.
