Guillermo Ignacio 'Willy' Cañas was named after an Argentine tennis star by the name of Guillermo Vilas. He favorite surface is clay, but he is dangerous on hard-court and grass. Cañas started playing the game of tennis at age 7, and the same year he turned pro, he had an excellent start reaching quarterfinals of Junior Wimbledon in 1995. In 2000 he injured his wrist and in 2001 moved from 227th place in the ATP rankings to the 15th, earning him the ATP Comeback Player of Year award. In the 2002 ATP Masters Series of Canada, Cañas won his first ATP Masters Series title. His highest singles ranking was 8th in June 2005.
