John Robert Isner began playing tennis at the age of nine years old. His father, Robert, is a builder; his mother Karen is a real estate agent. Jordan, one of two of John's older brothers is a teaching tennis pro and Nathan is a builder and works with their father (all three of them attended North Carolina State University) John played four years at the University of Georgia from 2004-2007 and is the school's all-time leader in singles and doubles wins. In May 2007, John lost to the University of Virginia's Somdev Devvarman in a third set tie break at the NCAA men's singles final. John's off-court hobbies include poker, golf, basketball and fishing.
