Ernest Gulbis was born August 30, 1988 in Riga, Latvia. He is known as one of the most talented players on tour, but has so far lacked consistency. Gulbis prefers hard courts and considers his serve one of his best shots along with the backhand dropshot.

His first title came in Delray Beach in 2010, where he decisively ripped big-serving Croatian Ivo Karlovic 6-2, 6-3 in the final. He began playing tennis at the age of five when his grandmother took him to the courts for the first time. His father, Ainars, was a former basketball player, while his grandfather started on the former Soviet Union national basketball team. Speaks Latvian, Russian, and English, and enjoys playing soccer, hockey, and basketball.
