Jurgen Melzer began playing tennis at the age of nine. His father, Rudolf, is a businessman and ex-mayor of his hometown Deutsch-Wagram and his mother, Michaela, is a saleswoman. He has one younger brother, Gerald. He speaks German, English and French. His childhood idols were Stefan Edberg, Michael Stich and Patrick Rafter. He captured a Wimbledon junior title in 1999. His favorite shot is backhand drop shot and his fitness trainer is Jan Velthuis and coached by former ATP pro Joakim Nystrom.
