Sloane Stephens was born into a family of athletes; her father, John Stephens, was a running back in the NFL and her mother, Sybil, was a swimmer for Boston University who became the first female African-American in Division I history to be named All-American. Sloane studied at the prestigious Evert Academy before going pro in 2008 and had a breakout year in 2013 when she went 15-4 in the Grand Slams, upsetting longtime idol Serena Williams in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.
