Head Flex Point Radical (Midplus)
Reviewed byMichael Sofranko
With its new Flex Point technology, Head now offers a comfort and feel that was absent from its previous racquet line. Leading this group is the Head Flex Point Radical midplus, a player’s racquet whose 11.3 ounce weight won’t tire you during long match play, and whose stability and comfort represent a significant leap beyond its predecessors.
I thought I’d prefer the Radical oversize, attracted, as many are, by the visions of Andre Agassi dismantling younger, stronger opponents in major tournaments. These were quickly displaced by a midplus Radical stick that was easy to swing, provided plenty of control, and had just enough power to keep my pace varied and my opponents off-guard.
And the racquet is comfortable. Ground strokes felt firm and the racquet very responsive, surprisingly forgiving on off-center hits. I found myself directing my shots with accuracy and just enough pace. The only draw back was the tight 18 x 20 string pattern that makes topspin and slice less available than on the more open patterned racquets I usually prefer. This was true on ground strokes as well as on serves, where placement and varied pace replaced the high kick or slice I often depend on to establish an advantage. The Radical mid-plus did allow me to play more aggressively on service returns, however, especially because its maneuverability afforded the chance for split second adjustments against serves with pace or movement. Be aware that although it is responsive, this is not a power racquet. You must stroke the ball, and the lighter weight may tempt you to over-hit on second serves delivered without much pace. Relax. You’ll get used to it.
The maneuverability of the Radical Midplus at net is a huge advantage during heated volleys, especially in doubles play. Despite its relatively lighter weight, well-struck volleys felt crisp and landed deep in the court. Touch and drop volleys are a delight because of the enhanced Flex Point feel of the ball on the string bed. The Radical is 2 points head-light, and this relatively even balance adds stability during net play as well.
Head has really advanced itself with the Flex Point design. Enhanced comfort, feel, and stability make the midplus Radical my favorite among the new Head racquets I’ve play-tested. It you’re a developing player, the Radical midplus will allow you to take the next step in your game. If you’re an intermediate or advanced player, the stability and range of this racquet might be a perfect match for you.
