Tennis Leagues Ready to Launch Spring Season

Clear off the cobwebs and nail up the nets, because tennis is returning to the courts.

Social tennis leagues across the country are relaunching their programs after postponing, and in some cases canceling, their winter season due to Covid-19.

Tennis is one of the safest sports from Covid-19, and with warmer weather upon us, league officials have constructed a new set of guidelines for the spring season. Players are pumped up, and ready to PLAY!

Although the new protocols differ from each tennis club to sports complex, some of the new rules we’re seeing are:

  • Players having to bring their own water and snacks;
  • Everyone entering and exiting courts wearing masks;
  • Practicing social distancing at the switch;
  • Racquet tapping as opposed to high-fives or end-of-match handshake;
  • Playing a 10-point tiebreaker in lieu of a deciding set.

Tennis leagues offer players an opportunity to apply their athletic skills and problem-solving that they’ve practiced during the off season.  Joining a tennis league is a chance to measure your personal improvement, whether you’re playing singles or doubles, mixed or junior.

Benefits of Joining a Tennis League:

It’s great for everyone! Most leagues range in skill level from beginner to advanced, with the intention of matching opponents evenly for a more gratifying experience for all.

Modest commitment. League is typically played once a week, though some teams elect to practice a second day during the week.

Convenient. Times, dates, and location vary from city to city, and most leagues offer a choice between morning and evening hours.

Short season. Leagues vary between 8 and 12 weeks, with some home matches and others away. Travel is not required and many away matches are within 30-minutes of the home courts.

Tailored to fit your schedule. A team schedule is provided in advance, giving you the opportunity to communicate your availability before the start of the season.

A measure of progress. Match stats are reported by the team captains (mostly set scores). Often, these stats, along with team rankings, are kept on the league website.

Competition. Leagues also offer you the ability to face new opponents, requiring you to use your critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which you might not otherwise get the chance to use, especially when you’re always playing with, or against the same people.

Learn something new.  League lets you see a wider array of shot selection, strategic play, and sportsmanship.

Socially Rewarding. One of the best parts of league play is the social aspect. Leagues don’t just build skill, they build friendships, self-esteem, and a love of the sport.

Before you head back to the courts, you should make sure your racquet is in good condition.  We recommend that you restring your rackets a minimum of 4 times a year to maintain tension, control, comfort, feel, and power.

Tennis Balls

You’ll also want to make sure you have a good supply of tennis balls.

The Wilson Triniti Tennis Ball are the first of their kind!  Dubbed a high-performance tennis ball, this ball is touted for lasting 4X longer than the average tennis ball and uses 100% recyclable packaging.  Not to worry, these balls are approved for USTA and ITF play.

That’s right, tennis balls might be yellow now, but manufacturers are recognizing the need to GO GREEN!

So are we at Tennis Express, which is why we are proud to promote a FREE Tennis Ball Recycling Program.   We encourage league members to participate and will have promotions on our social media platforms, so be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram

Tennis Shoes

When was the last time you checked your Shoes? It might be time to do a little ‘sole searching’?  If you find you’re in need of a new pair of tennis shoes before the league starts, we can totally help! We offer a wide selection of shoes for men, women, and children, and offer same-day shipping on thousands of items.

Teams aren’t as strict as they once were about uniforms, but they might suggest players wear a certain color top or bottom.  Good thing we carry a wide variety of apparel from top brand names like Nike, Adidas, Fila, New Balance, Under Armour, and Lucky In Love

You can check out other accessories such as Bags, Grips, Caps & Visors, Masks as well as Sports Medicine.
