Tennis fans will be thoroughly entertained by the movie King Richard. The biopic reveals what, or maybe more importantly, who, made the Williams sisters a household tennis name. If you guessed their father, Richard Williams, you would be correct.
The movie is based on a true story. It depicts the upbringing of Venus Williams and her younger sister Serena Williams. Most of us know about the amazing accomplishments they’ve experienced on the court, but few know the challenges they faced off the court. The movie begins in Compton, Calif., and gives us a glimpse of what their lives were like growing up in the ghetto. Not only did they face harsh economic conditions, but they also had to overcome ethnic diversity.
Award-winning actor Will Smith plays Richard Williams and does a fantastic job of demonstrating the vision his character Richard, has for his daughters, all five of them. Even though this film is categorized as a drama, it’s filled with humor, love, suspense, and an unforgettable ending that is fit for a queen. It also proves that when you have a plan and a passion to succeed, nothing can stop you.
King Richard Reviews
Rotten Tomatoes gave it a Tomatometer score of 90%. Critic Rachel Wagner of Rachel’s Reviews said, “Worth watching for the acting and the chance to cheer on a family that together never gave up on their dreams.”
Entertainment Weekly did an exclusive interview with Venus Williams, Serena Williams, and Will Smith. The trio shared behind the scene details about the film’s heartfelt journey from script to screen.
Venus started her career as an American tennis pro in 1994. Her first match was held in Oakland, CA. She was an unranked player that lost in the second round to World No. 2 Sanchez-Vicario. To date, she has won 49 singles titles and has been ranked No. 1 in the world for both singles and doubles. In February 2002, when she first reached No. 1 in the world, Venus became the first African American woman to do so in the Open Era. More recently she is the founder of an inspirational clothing line named EleVen. Venus selected the brand name by applying her life-long motto, which is to be better than your best. She references the scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being your best, Venus always aspires to an 11.
Serena started playing tennis at the age of five. She turned pro in 1995 and has won 73 singles titles, with 23 of them Grand Slam titles. That’s the most GS won by any player in the Open Era, behind Margaret Court, who holds the record. Serena has earned almost $1 Billion in prize money. Although she is 40 years old, she continues to play on the WTA. Serena is also a UNICEF International Goodwill Ambassador. Besides making appearances at schools and with community outreach programs for at-risk youth, she spends time with her husband Alexis Ohanian, and their daughter Olympia.
She has earned the title as one of G.O.A.T. (Greatest Of All Time).
