A tall, powerful Russian, Daniil Medvedev has asserted himself as a force among the next generation of men’s tennis players. Nicknamed Bear, he started taking tennis seriously at the age of six. Medvedev studied applied economics and commerce at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, but he dropped out to focus on tennis. With his family he moved to Antibes, France where he trained at the tennis academy. As a result of living mostly overseas, Medvedev can speak French, English, and Russian. His breakthrough season on tour came in 2019, when he reached 6 straight finals with a 29-3 run after Wimbledon finishing runner-up in Washington, DC and Montreal, won the ATP Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati and reached his first Grand Slam final at the US Open, the youngest Grand Slam finalist since Djokovic in 2010. His favorite surface is grass and he considers his return his best shot. In his spare time, Medvedev enjoys playing PlayStation, and if he wasn’t a tennis player, he would have played any other sport.
