Gael Sebastien Monfils - nicknamed "Lamonf" - was born to father Rufin, a former soccer player from Guadeloupe, and mother, Sylvette, a nurse from the island of Martinique. He has one younger brother, Daryl. Monfils considers Arthur Ashe to be his favorite player and says if he didn't play tennis he would play basketball. Off the courts, Gael walks around with his iPod listening to music, in particular R&B. In 2009 he broke into the top 10 for the first time in his career and reached the QF at Roland Garros where he beat No. 6 Andy Roddick before losing to eventual champion Roger Federer. An injury kept him sidelined throughout Wimbledon and he made his return in Montreal with a second-round loss to Juan Carlos Ferrero. (l. to Nadal).
