Yonex always has a wide array of frames for players of all types. Fans of the previous Ezone AI models will enjoy the new update, the Yonex Ezone DR. The DR 100 utilizes advanced technology in a more player spec weight class. Nanometric DR Carbon is added into the layup for improved ball speed and power. The frame has an Oval Pressed Shaft generating more spin and control with its increased flex. Yonex didn’t forget about comfort and has added in Quake Shut Gel to ensure only positive feedback reaches the player. I recently took to the court with the DR 100 see how it would perform and here is what I found.

Groundstrokes
Players will find the ability to dictate baseline rallies from either wing with the Ezone DR 100. I put the strong 11.1oz strung weight to good use, hitting deep, penetrating shots from both sides. I especially found a groove with my backhand. The manageable weight and headlight balance allowed me to go crosscourt and then whip the next ball up the line. The sweet spot is generous, as was to be expected with the Isometric head shape. The 100 is a stiffer frame than the DR 98 and I found it to be a bit more noticeable on off center shots. The racquet is easy to accelerate through contact, ensuring that there is ample spin on tap. I had no problem using extra topspin to create varying angles and depth and also play defense when needed. The racquet’s weight also provided added stability against big hitters, ensuring I block big serves back and neutralize points when necessary. On offensive points, I enjoyed the racquet’s easy transition from topspin to stepping into the court and flattening out a finishing shot.

Volleys & Serves
At net, the Ezone Dr 100 is more than capable of holding its own. It had excellent punching power for finishing high volleys and driving the ball deep into the court. The balance kept it nimble and I was able to keep pace in quick rallies without it feeling sluggish. While I preferred the 98 for touch volleys, the DR 100 still had more than enough response to attempt drop and touch volleys regularly. Stability at the net was also high with the weight and flex in the throat soaking up pace and redirecting it.

Serving with the Ezone DR 100 was an exercise in versatility. The frames weight gave me excellent power and control for flat serves. I hit more aces up the T than I have in a long time. Directional control was solid and I felt it would continue to improve as I dialed in my string choice. Despite the increased weight, the racquet sped through the top of the zone enough to create excellent spin on my second serve. I had good action on my kick serve and was able to keep my slice serve out wide low and skidding. This allowed me to start points in an offensive position even when faced with hitting a second serve.

Feel/Comfort
The DR 100 plays with a noticeably firmer feel than that of its 98 inch sibling. That isn’t to say it was uncomfortable, it was just definitely an adjustment from what I was expecting. There was still a unique feel to the flex in the throat, which created a connected feel and a responsive, predictable string bed. The Quake Shut Gel does a good job of blocking out harsh vibration without overly muting the overall feel. Players with sensitive arms should have little trouble beyond just ensuring they choose the right string.

Overall
Players seeking a racquet with the weight and power to drive the ball through the court without sacrificing mobility and spin will enjoy the Yonex Ezone DR 100. It offers impressive power with a controlled feel and easy access to spin. With a feel that mixes comfort and crisp response, the overall package creates a strong all court weapon that will appeal to a wide variety of play styles.
