Michael first learned to play tennis St. Paul, MN at an early age. His family then moved first to Placentia and then Encinitas, California, to increase the tennis opportunities for Michael and his older brother, Carl. At age 15 he was competing on the pro tour and soon became the youngest player to win a main draw match at the US Open. At 17, he became the youngest player to win a Grand Slam title in 1989 French Open, and the youngest player to reach the Top 5 world rankings. Chang remained in the Top 10 for seven years reaching as high as World No. 2 and finals of the 1996 Australian Open and US Open. In 2008, Chang married Amber Liu, also a professional tennis player and now has two daughters. Since 2014 Michael joined Kei Nishikori's coaching team and has helped him reach the finals of 2014 US Open, semifinals of the 2014 ATP Tour Finals as well as the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, Wimbledon and French Open.
