Sloane Stephens was born into a family of athletes; her father, John Stephens, was a running back in the NFL and her mother, Sybil, was a swimmer for Boston University who became the first female African-American in Division I history to be named All-American. Sloane was first introduced to tennis at a club across the street from her house in Fresno, California, and her stepfather served as her primary inspiration for beginning to play the sport. She moved to South Florida to train at Nick Saviano's Tennis Academy for many years and eventually turn pro. She developed into a promising junior player, reaching a career-high ITF Junior ranking of world No. 5 and winning 3-out-of-4 Grand Slam Girls' Doubles titles in 2010 alongside partner Tímea Babos. Sloane’s breakout year on tour came in 2013 when she went 15-4 in the Grand Slams, upsetting longtime idol Serena Williams in the Quarterfinals of the Australian Open at 19 years of age. In 2017, Stephens took out friend Madison Keys to win her first major, the US Open. In 2018 she continued her success by winning her first Premier Mandatory WTA title at the Miami Open, reaching a second Grand Slam Singles final at the French Open, entering the top 10 for the first time, and finishing runner-up at the WTA Finals. In 2013 she started her very own foundation to help build tennis courts and set up after-school tennis programs in underprivileged areas. In 2017 she graduated from Indiana University Easy with a B.S. degree in Communications, and now is engaged to US Soccer star Jozy Altidore.
