Wilson Surge BLX Tennis Racquet

Fans of last year’s black and green colored BLX Surge will be pleased to know that Wilson is keeping all the key technologies of the previous model. But Wilson is giving this model a makeover with a new aggressive design. Enlaced with a natural volcanic rock – basalt, Wilson is able to create an environmentally friendly frame that absorbs harsh vibrations and is durable to boot.

Groundstrokes
I found that this racquet performed well from the baseline. I didn’t have any trouble putting my racquet squarely on the ball. A 100 square inch head size is quite forgiving compared to the 95 square inch point of reference I’m coming from. And once again, the maneuverability of the frame stood out. Its light weight really allowed me to swing unencumbered. But you can’t have it all. The only department this racquet lacked was stability. If I was forced to chase down a sharp angled ball with heavy spin out wide, I would have to muscle the ball back over the net to compensate for its light weight. It was a similar requirement even if the ball was hit hard and deep right to me. For either of those scenarios some additional weight would have been helpful.

Volleys
As you may have inferred at this point, the same strengths and imperfection showed at net. The racquet was very maneuverable, which allowed me to reach tough shots. But if the ball had some weight/spin behind it, I was content with just getting the ball over the net, let alone trying to control it. .

Serve
Weighing just shy of 10.5 ounces, 1 pt head light, and 100 square inches, made this a very maneuverable frame. From the drop of the racquet head to the follow through, I felt I could generate plenty of racquet head speed. And generating spin wasn’t difficult, due to the open 16 X 19 string pattern.

Overall
This racquet has good feel, a dual result of the BLX technology and the racquet’s measurements. With exceptional maneuverability, a 100 square inch head size, and a good balance of power and control, this racquet is a potential performer for a wide range of players. And the new color scheme is an added bonus. But the stability is one crucial drawback of this frame. I would recommend this racquet to any intermediate player, whether junior or adult, who isn’t hitting nor returning balls with heavy spin on a consistent basis.
