Amelie Mauresmo is a former world No. 1 French tennis player that's well known for her powerful one-handed backhand and strong net play. She decided just before age 4 to play tennis after watching Yannick Noah win the 1983 Roland Garros on TV. In 1996, Mauresmo captured both the Junior French Open and Wimbledon Girls' Singles titles. She was also named 1996 Junior World Champion by the International Tennis Federation. Later on in 1998 Yannick Noah picked her to play for the French Fed Cup team where she helped the team win the 2003 title. 1999 was her breakout year reaching the Australian Open Women's Singles final as an unseeded player. In 2004 she continued her rise by reaching the Semifinals at Wimbledon, Quarterfinals of the three other Grand Slam tournaments and winning three Tier I titles in Rome, Berlin, and Montreal. She also won a silver medal in Singles at the Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece then soon became the first French tennis player to become world No. 1. 2006 was her time to shine as she captured her first Grand Slam Singles titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Additionally, she reached the Semifinals of the US Open the same year and returned to the No. 1 ranking. In 2009 she decided to retire from player tennis, but she wouldn't be away from the game that long. She then turned to coaching where she helped known players like Victoria Azarenka, Marion Bartoli, Andy Murray and Lucas Pouille reach new career heights as well as being appointed captain of the French Davis Cup team in 2018. She likes downhill skiing, go karts, horseback riding, and surfing. She has two Golden Retrievers and enjoys red wine and has a wine cellar at home.
