Americans to Watch During the 2024 Wimbledon Tournament

The 2024 Wimbledon Championships is officially underway, and with July 4th just a few days away, let’s take a look at the most promising Americans playing in this year’s tournament. In the men’s division, there are no Americans currently in the top 10; however, there are a few up-and-coming players to look out for. On the other hand, the women have a couple individuals in the top 10, with even more on the verge of breaking through.

The last American woman to win Wimbledon was none other than Serena Williams, the greatest woman to ever play the sport. The last American man to win Wimbledon was way back in 2000 when Pete Sampras bested the Australian Pat Rafter for the title.

Coco Gauff Australian Open 2020

Coca Gauff is currently the second-best women’s tennis player in the world. She won the US Open in 2023, becoming the youngest woman to do so since Serena Williams in 1999. Gauff has had one of the best careers as a young player and her most recent title was the ASB Classic in January.

Jessica Pegula currently sits at 5th in the world. She has won 5 singles titles, one of which was the German Open in June, beating her national rival, Coco Gauff. Entering Wimbledon in top form, she will be a contender to win the entire tournament.

Danielle Collins is the 11th-best women’s tennis player in the world. While she has not won a major tournament in her career, she was able to make it to the 2022 Australian Open finals. Is this the moment she claims her long-awaited prize?

Taylor Fritz is the best American tennis player at the moment. His current rank is 12th in the world and, while he has never won a Grand Slam before, he has won the coveted Indian Wells. Additionally, Fritz recently won the Eastbourne International for the third consecutive year. Coming into the tournament in top form, he will be a favorite for American supporters.

Tommy Paul currently sits at 13th in the world. His rise to form has been swift and he’ll hope to carry some of that momentum into Wimbledon. He won the 2024 Queen’s Club Championships in June, and won his first-round match in Wimbledon today!

Ben Shelton sits right under Fritz and Paul at 14th. His aggressive and deft playstyle is ideal for the grass at Wimbledon, and his 149 mph serve is a deadly weapon. While he is not a favorite to win the tournament, he is an exciting prospect that might cause an upset or two.

Christopher Eubanks is currently 62nd in the world, but he might have an edge in this tournament, seeing as he made it all the way to the quarter-finals in the 2023 Wimbledon Championships. His dream run was squashed by Daniil Medvedev (World no. 5) in a 5-set thriller.
