Ernest Gulbis, nicknamed the Gull or Ernie, is known as one of the most talented players on tour, but has extraordinary looking strokes. He began playing tennis at the age of five when his grandmother took him to the courts for the first time. His father, Ainars, was a former basketball player, while his grandfather started on the former Soviet Union national basketball team. Gulbis' professional training in tennis began at the age of 12, when he was enrolled at the Niki Pilic Tennis Academy. As a kid he always competed against Novak Djokovic and developed a close friendly rivalry. His biggest breakthroughs came in 2008 when he reached Men's Singles Quarterfinals at the French Open, in 2010 when he captured his first ATP Singles title in Delray Beach, and in 2014 when he reached the Men's Singles Semifinals at the French Open. Gulbis prefers hard courts and considers his serve one of his best shots along with the backhand dropshot. Gulbis Speaks Latvian, Russian, and English, and enjoys playing soccer, hockey, and basketball.
