Sam Stosur was born in 1984 and was introduced to tennis at the age of 8 by her friend. She got a racquet for Christmas, started hitting with her brother Daniel, and loved it from the first time. At the age of 14, Stosur joined the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) and, two year later, joined the Australian Institute of Sport tennis program to train. In her early pro years, she had more success on the doubles side winning 8 WTA Doubles titles in 2005, and 11 Doubles titles in 2006 mostly with partner Lisa Raymond. She is well known for being one of the fittest players on the tour, despite having suffered Lyme disease in 2007. In 2010 and 2011 she had her best seasons finishing in the top 10 rankings, reaching the Women's Singles Final at the 2010 French Open, and winning the 2011 Women's Singles US Open title defeating Serena Williams in the final. She became the first Australian woman since Evonne Goolagong Cawley in 1980 to win a Grand Slam Singles tournament. Sam has a dog named Billy, and enjoys going to the beach, swimming or surfing in the sea, hanging out with friends or listening to music in her spare time. She likes the TV shows Seinfeld and Grey's Anatomy, and her favorite movies are Anchor Man and Love Actually. She feels she can't live without lip balm, her passport and her tennis racquets.
