Elena Dementieva is a retired Russian tennis player who was supported by the Russian Tennis Federation for development. She was primarily coached by mother, Vera, and has won 16 WTA Singles titles, 6 WTA Doubles titles, a 2000 Olympic Silver medal in singles and a 2008 Olympic Gold medal in singles. She started playing tennis at age 7 and enrolled at Spartak Tennis Club, where she was coached for 3 years by Rauza Islanova, the mother of Marat Safin and Dinara Safina. Her best runs at a major came at the 2004 French Open and US Open where she reached the Women's Singles final. She also later reached the Women's Singles Semifinals of the 2009 Australian Open and Wimbledon. In 2010 she retired from tennis and later married professional hockey player Maxim Afinogenov. She welcomed their first child, Veronika, in 2014 and has a Yorkshire terrier named Patrick.
